- Steerer Tube: The top tube that inserts into the frame's head tube and connects to the stem. Modern BMX forks typically use a 1-1/8" straight, threadless, one-piece steerer tube for maximum strength.
- Fork Blades/Legs: The two prongs that hold the front wheel.
- Crown: The top area where the blades meet the steerer tube.
- Dropouts: The slots at the bottom of the fork legs where the front axle is secured.
- Preload Bolt: A bolt that screws into the top of the steerer tube to tighten the headset.
Key Specifications & Geometry
- Offset (Rake): The distance between the centerline of the steerer tube and the center of the axle.
- Short Offset (20-25mm): Quicker, more responsive steering, favored for street and front-wheel tricks like nose manuals.
- Long Offset (28-32mm+): More stability, preferred for dirt jumping and high-speed riding.
- Axle-to-Crown: The vertical distance from the center of the axle to the bottom of the head tube. Most modern forks are 350-355mm.
- Dropout Size: Nearly all modern BMX forks use 10mm (3/8") slots, while 14mm is rare.
- Material:
- 4130 Chromoly Steel: The industry standard for freestyle, offering high strength, durability, and a slight, controlled flex.
- Carbon Fiber: Used in high-end racing for maximum weight reduction.
- Hi-Ten Steel: Found on entry-level/kids' bikes, heavier and less durable than Chromoly.
